In August, the weather in Taipei is usually hot, humid and the sunlight can be intense, with occasional afternoon thunder showers. The highest temperature can reach 38°C. Taiwan's summer (June to October) falls during the Pacific typhoon season and the entire island is often hit by typhoons during these months. Taipei is generally safe but strong winds and heavy rain may still affect your travel plans. Be sure to keep a close watch on the weather forecast and we recommend booking airfare and accommodations that are exchangeable or refundable.
The language spoken in Taiwan is Mandarin Chinese and we use traditional Chinese characters. Though the younger generation in Taiwan may have some English ability and tourist attractions may likely have English speaking staff, we recommend downloading a translator app such as Papago (could be useful for taxi rides, night markets and smaller eateries).
Yes, the food and the beverages served at the AfA Conference 2025 will be vegan. The menu is curated by chef Nikki from South Africa.
Please note however that the conference venue is the hotel Marriot which is not a vegan hotel. Therefore, if you are booking accommodation in the hotel, please be aware that they serve options that are not vegan / plant-based. We have requested that they clearly label any non-vegan options. For further information please refer to the AfA Food and Beverage Policy document found here.
The conference will be held at the Taipei Marriott Hotel (www.taipeimarriott.com.tw), who has announced their commitment to source 100% cage-free-eggs and milk from dairy farms that have received the animal-welfare certification from the Environment and Animal Society of Taiwan, all by the end of April 2024!
This announcement came after discussions with our Taiwan co-hosts who suggested a change in the company’s policy before confirmation of the conference venue. Marriot Taipei learned about the impact companies can have on animal welfare by adopting humane policies and became the first five-star hotel in Taiwan to use 100% cage-free fresh eggs, liquid eggs, and milk with animal-welfare certification at the company’s six restaurants, banquet venues, employee cafeteria, and bakery.
We thank the Marriott Hotel Taipei for providing the conference with an amazing discount and for their support for animal welfare!
